Swallowed by the Sea

The Maldives is at risk of being swallowed by the sea. By the year 2100, it is predicted to have more than 70% of its land submerged underwater due to rising sea levels. The very waters that have sustained its economy and culture for decades may eventually be the catalyst of its demise. This passport redesign addresses the urgency for sustainability on a global scale.

Process

I was inspired by Maldives' rich biodiversity. Unfortunately, increasing sea temperatures are causing coral reef bleaching and declining fish populations. The pages evolve as a gradient of light to dark blue to represent this imminent apocalyptic future. Each spread is marked by 17 year intervals up until the year 2100.
