fantasy of a home

Born and raised in Malaysia, I use my art as an outlet for my homesickness and a means of connecting to my homeland. Fantasy of a Home explores the diasporic experience, the preservation of heritage in foreign lands, and the overlap of native and assimilated cultures through food, specifically consumer goods.

wayang kulit

Wayang Kulit is a Malaysian form of shadow puppetry. The puppets, traditionally made out of cowhide, are lit from behind to cast its shadow onto a cloth background. They are used to depict tales of myth, morality, and epic battles. The process of creating my own puppet was an exploration of identity, performance, and movement.

onion aunties

Onion Aunties is a translation of the Malay term "Mak Cik Bawang" to describe gossiping aunties. Gossiping presents itself as a social practice that transcends cultures and generations. A centerpiece to every kitchen table. This series of four prints highlights the dichotomy between the maternal act of cooking and the toxic nature of feeding the mouths of those they hurt.
